Might Guy is the best first guess in Narutodle, and Sasuke one of the worst
Narutodle lets you type any of 92 characters, but only 50 of them can be the day’s answer: the main cast and the best-known villains, Kage and teachers. The other 42, mostly side characters and deep cuts, can be typed as guesses but never come up. Classic gives you seven clues per guess: gender, affiliation, clan, rank, chakra natures, kekkei genkai and debut chapter. To find the strongest opener we played all 92 as a first guess against each of the 50 possible answers and counted how many answers would still fit the row of colours and arrows you get back. The average of that count is the score. A perfect opener would leave exactly one.
The ranking
| Rank | Opener | Answers left on average | Answers left at worst |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Might Guy | 1.28 | 3 |
| 2 | Iruka Umino | 1.32 | 3 |
| 3 | Kurenai Yuhi | 1.36 | 3 |
| 4 | Anko Mitarashi | 1.40 | 4 |
| 5 | Ibiki Morino | 1.40 | 4 |
| 9 | Sakura Haruno | 1.48 | 4 |
| 41 | Naruto Uzumaki | 2.56 | 6 |
| 54 | Kakashi Hatake | 3.00 | 7 |
| 81 | Sasuke Uchiha | 6.08 | 15 |
The median opener leaves 2.7 answers. The four weakest are Kimimaro, Kaguya Otsutsuki, Hamura Otsutsuki and Izuna Uchiha, each leaving between 12 and 16.
Why Might Guy works
Guy splits the 50 answers into 44 different rows of colours, so after one guess you are usually down to one or two names. He does it by being ordinary in every column that matters.
- No clan and no kekkei genkai. Twenty of the 50 answers have no clan and 30 have no kekkei genkai, and in Narutodle a “None” against a “None” turns green. Those two tiles alone sort the board into four rough groups.
- Konohagakure only. A third of the answers live outside the Leaf, so the affiliation tile comes back green for 28, yellow for 5 (Leaf ninja who also joined something else) and red for 17.
- Jonin. Rank works as a ladder from Genin to Kage, and a guess one step away turns yellow. Jonin sits in the middle, so Chunin and Kage answers light up yellow while Genin and the missing-nin stay red.
- Two chakra natures. Fire and Lightning are shared with plenty of the cast but not with everyone, which gives a real mix of yellow and red instead of a tile that is always the same.
- An early debut. His debut chapter sits near the first quarter of the story, so the arrow points later for 27 answers and earlier for 22.
The rest of the top ten follow the same pattern. Iruka, Kurenai, Anko and Ibiki are clanless Leaf ninja with a middle rank and no bloodline, which is exactly the profile that splits the board most evenly.
Why the main characters make poor openers
The heroes are the first names most players type, and they are built to be exceptional, which is the opposite of what an opener needs.
Sasuke ranks 81st. His rank is Missing-nin, which only matches the 12 other missing-nin and gives no ladder hint for anyone else. He uses six of the seven chakra natures, so that tile turns yellow for 44 of the 50 answers and tells you almost nothing. His debut in chapter 3 means the arrow points later for 41 answers. His Uchiha clan matches only three other answers, and his kekkei genkai tile comes back red for 42.
Naruto ranks 41st for similar reasons. He has all seven natures, the top rank on the ladder and a chapter 1 debut, so his natures tile is yellow for almost everyone and his debut arrow points later for nearly every answer. Kakashi sits at 54th with all seven natures, Kage rank and the Sharingan.
Sakura is the exception among Team 7, in 9th place. She is a clanless Chunin from the Leaf with no kekkei genkai, the same shape as the openers at the top.
Two practical notes
These scores count only the 50 characters who can be the answer, because that is what decides your next guess. Typing a deep cut as an opener is allowed, but many of them carry rare clans and bloodlines that match no one, which is why Izuna and Hamura sit at the very bottom. Kaguya can be the answer, yet she shares her clan and affiliation with none of the other 49.
The scores also assume you read every tile on your second guess. If the first row comes back mostly red, Narutodle opens extra clues after 6, 12 and 18 wrong guesses, so a slow start rarely costs the round.
